why did this happen?
was his bottle pressure to high making him run lean?
The reasons I don't think it was bottle pressure are; 1.) There is a rather large puff of smoke right at the launch of the car that looks to be much darker than the smoke that pours from the car after the launch. To me, this indicates that the car was overly rich as it left the line. Generally rich is safe (although being way too rich can also hurt a motor).
2.) Bottle pressure does not normally affect the tune enough to lean the motor to the point of hurting it. In almost all of the tests that I've seen, adjustments in bottle pressure between 950-1050psi make less than 5rwhp difference, and generally the a/f is not changed enough to hurt the motor. Although, I guess if the tune is already on the edge of being too lean then bottle pressure might be able to affect the tune enough to hurt the motor. I don't think there are that many people that tune their car to this point though.
To me it looks like either the tune was too rich or the activation point of the system was too low of an rpm and he popped a head gasket (all of the white smoke would be from water/coolant). It's very hard to tell by the audio, but it sounds almost like he may have bounced it off the rev limiter which definately does not mix with nitrous.

That was a failed head gasket from the start.
The tune being off wouldn't have had time to do that.
I've made it 660 ft on the bottle at 14:1 AFR without any damage, and well tune problems usually show up on the last half of the track.
Cheap fuel, 4 bolts per cylinder, high compression, advanced timing, while using to much nitrous at low RPM= water on the track...
