Mine fills up to about 8lbs, then they have to use a pump. This was with the bottle at about 20 degrees and frosted.

What was the temp of the mother bottle? It wouldn't fill if it's cold too.

The mother was garage temp. I'd say around 65.

add salt to the water to lower the freezing temp and get it even colder..

Seems that you can get better fills just freezing the bottle and filling it. The price of a chest freezer is far less than a pump.
I hadn't thought about just freezing and filling w/o a pump, that would make it a lot cheaper if you already had a freezer. Do you think it would be feasable to, say, take your bottle heater out the car and use it on the mother bottle when that one starts to get low to fill better?

Interesting thread.

I think just filling a styrofoam cooler with ice and water would work pretty well. Those things can get really cold and the cost would be relatively cheap. Provided you have a freezer with an ice machine.

Probably would be easier... but if you remember your chem classes, it's more about consistency. If you want a consistent outcome, you have to be consistent about your procedure. No way of telling how "cold" a foam ice chest is with ice. Also, the idea of a bottle heater out of the car will have little effect on a 56 lb bottle. After many hours of trying to heat it, you'll find the aluminum will dissipate the heat faster than you can warm it. HOWEVER.. wrapping it in a water heater blanket would be a great idea. 65 deg is a little chilly. I think it's 80 deg gets you around 950 psi. (someone correct my figures if they're off)

It could be consistent for chilling one or two bottles, just use a thermometer. Now if you let it sit for a long time, yeah I agree 100% it would whack things out.

Any tips or tricks you can share? ie: temp of mother bottle, length of time freezing bottles, pressures???

when i did fills i told people bring me the bottle the day before you want it back, so i tossed the bottles in the freezer all day/night. when i pull them out of the freezer i know there cold enough if they get condensation on the out side and freezes. mother bottle was kept at room temp 70+/- a little bit. if i was trying to squeeze the last bit out of the mother bottle i would heat the mother bottle with 2 halogen work lamps. never had a pressure gauge on the tanks so i dont know pressure. Normally i can fill a 10 lb bottle from empty in one fill as long as the mother bottle wasnt low

My local nitrous filler has an ancient electric pump that he can put 10# in my bottle at any temp. He says its one of the most reliable ways of ensuring a true fill. Ive been trying to scope myself out one, so I could just start buying mother bottles, but have had no luck.

This also ensures a complete empty of the mother bottle, so there isnt any wasted gas.

this is true...we use a big *** meat freezer filled with slushy ice water,,usually can fill a 10# inside 40 minutes....in the ice longer i can get 11-12#'s in a 10#er...

I just got a 65lb bottle for $190 at praxair. Plus I found two pump manufactures to order a pump thru. I can get a new pump for $410. But because of the modification it is a 3-6 week wait.

Ice water is always exactly the freezing point of water, no matter what atmospheric pressure or otherwise. Ice water is consistently used to calibrate temperature measuring devices. This is because the triple point of water is used to define 273.16 Kelvin (0.01 °C), the temperature of the triple point of water is actually a definition rather than a measured quantity.

For those interested in understanding this:

When I had nitrous on my talon I froze my bottle. I would stick it in the freezer the night before. Splash a little water on it so it had a nice lair. The shop I had it filled up at charged a set rate for a 10lb bottle. So I would get barely over 11lbs in a 10lb bottle and it would cost me the same. It was pretty cheap also. I believe about 25 bucks for a 10lb bottle.
