backfire question
It's possible that something else mechanical went first (threw a rod, snapped a timing chain and so on) and that caused a backfire, which would mean there could/should be additional damage. Hopefully it was just a hick up that took the intake, but IMHO there is usually an underlying condition that causes a backfire.

Yes a backfire can cause engine damage as the pics below show. You should do a comp test, and/or a clyinder leakage test to find out if any cylinder was hurt, and/or the heads. Sorry to hear this happened.
