Removing Bottle Valve

Removing Bottle Valve i need some suggestions on removing a bottle valve off of an old looking nos bottle. i had a bad experience with a zex bottle last year doing this and am trying not to damage this bottle.
last year i used a big wrench around the zex valve and beat the wrench with a lead hammer. took me 3-4 hours of hardcore smashing to get the valve off and back on. way too long.
then i did it again with the same bottle and got it off fine but when i put the valve back on, i'm pretty sure i cross threaded it because it got stuck partially on and won't finish threading on nor reverse to take the valve off. going to attack it again tonight to hopefully salvage the zex valve.
so what's a good way to not damage my nos bottle?
