Computer chip keys?
My wife lost a set of keys for the Equinox. Anyone know anything about computer chip keys?
I see a bunch of blanks on ebay that say they have the chip, but won't it have to be programmed to match?

I had an 05 Colorado and it had anti theft but the resistor was built into the lock cylinder. A plain jane ebay key worked fine.
I have an 08 Chev Fullsize van and had the dealer make a non-chipped copy, won't start the van but works on the doors.
I don't remember the specific names of the types of anti theft used in the newest gm's but one of the types the resistor is in the lock cylinder only. Not the key. That type will allow you to get a non-chip key and use it. The other type has a transponder in the head of the key and will need to be programmed.
Worst that will happen if it's a chipped key and you use a non chipped is it won't start.
Oh yeah, look in the owners manual. It should state the type of anti theft used.
From the price of the key, it's got a chip in it. Retail ~$48. PT# 89024363. I've got a ton at work for $35 if you want, bring the VIN in and I'll have it cut for you. Programming the key is easy if you have at least one that's already programmed.
1. With a previously learned master key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key.
3. Within 10 seconds of turning OFF the ignition, insert the key to be learned and turn ON the ignition. The vehicle has now learned the new key.
That pretty much works on almost every newer GM rig.
HTH.
