i totally agree about getting down to the bottom of it but i cant't afford to send them off if im not using them again. i will see if we can get our hands on a dial indicator and test the springs for binding but im planning on making sure its set up properly this time. im really curious to see what cam it is. im also the curious type, otherwise i wouldve dropped it at your shop or toms and just cut the check. i HAVE to know what caused it or i will never feel confident in my engine again. hoping the cam specs will help with this puzzle.

For pushrod length...don't take ANYONE'S length suggestions. Measure, measure, measure.....did I mention, you need to measure?? ;p Personally, I measure every single one....just to be as close to spot-on as possible. The preload window on quality lifters is usually pretty narrow.

so we got the heads off today. not a pleasant sight. there is obvious pitting on the cam, you can feel it if you lightly drag a flat head on the marks. cylinder 8 has very light scratching. its barely noticeable while running my fingers on the wall and only on the bottom half so im gonna leave the bottom end alone for now. we havent tested for binding on the springs yet, ran out of time. I will try to get to that in the next few days. so im gonna order a new cam, might go with a custom grind, 230/232 .609/.615 with 112+0 lsa.. thats pretty much what is in there now, but atleast i will know lsa numbers.. also looking at vengeance racing vrx6 cam and eps cams... james, tim, wong.. i need advise guys please!

If your old cam is a billet core andyou want to save a few buck just have Oregon Cam Grinders re-grind your old cam. They have a good variety of lobes available for LS engines. Im looking at their lobes right now. Here are a few options and it would only cost 143.00 for a regrind. Depending on the severity of the pitting, they might be able to polish it out and keep the same specs. They can also measure the specs and give you an accurate cam card to have. Lots of options for ya.

228/.585
228/.627
230/.590
230/.605
231/.614
231/.644
232/.595
234/.598
236/.609

Well i guess when we get it out, I will have to take it over there. Thanks for the heads up. Brandon, poncho, had his cam ground there and said it was only like $300 for the custom grind. I didnt know they could do that. Its pretty deep tho, and on more than one lobe. Im thinking a new cam is gonna be needed but hoping it can be ground out.
Thanks!

Yeah Tims Torquer knockoff cam was ground there. Tom Wong uses them alot for his heads/cam builds. I just had a regrind done and my used core had some fucked up lobes from a rod that decided it needed fresh air. They can take off quite a bit but the only downside is that it will change the base circle of the cam and may require different length pushrods. They will tell you how much they remove. Mine was. 020 off the base circle.

Brandon,

You were there when it came apart. Stock valve springs or aftermarket?
You guys determined the heads are not ported. How did you determine that?
What heads are they?
It's going to be really hard to tell if the springs went into coil bind with the heads off the car. It's hard to do ON the car with hydraulic lifters.
How did the lifter wheels look? If the cam looks bad, so will the lifters.

What kind of noise was it making?

On the tune, those issues can be fixed.

Since the OP is going to put the nitrous back on the car, I'd go with a cam of less than .600" lift, less than 230 intake duration and stick with 114 lobe sep. That lobe sep will make life easier on your tuner for sure. And yes, it's going to need a tune. And the specs I just mentioned make stock rockers the best choice. (I just lost a YT rocker last Sunday....fortunately, I was close to home).

Lastly, it's 2013 guys, how about some photos?

Hi Tom, how's things?

Ron

I've got a cam spec to N20. My question is why a smaller cam like you suggested? Would it depend on the shot cause I'm running a 250 shot...just wondering.

Because it's easy on parts.
N2O brings it's own oxygen...you don't need a big cam.

Have you ever actually run a 250 shot before?
