Angry Headgasket is leaking, now what?

As if my car hasn't been a total thorn in my side for most of the year, I got the great news last week that the headgasket is leaking. On the positive side it hasn't totally blown yet. At any rate I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm currently pricing parts, but could use some direction there if anyone has any recommendations.

I don't have the money to pay somebody to do it, and all the quotes I've gotten are just absurd. The dealership quoted $2,500, and a local mechanic quoted me even higher on the basis that the job is a total pain (though it sounded more like he just didn't have anyone with skill or experience to do it).

I'd almost rather sell the car and be done with it, but don't want to eat a few grand in losses if I can help it. Anyone know a good place I could take it to (for a reasonable rate), or where to get the parts so I can spend the next month or so trying to do it myself?

You can buy the head gaskets at any auto parts store or get them from an online parts supplier like RockAuto who has low prices and fast shipping. Just don't go to a GM dealer they will rape you.

I would not consider $26.00 each from a dealership being raped. Call them...they might surprise you, and you KNOW you'll be getting the correct head gaskets. I just picked up a set for an L33 today for 26.00 each.

Yeah that is surprising, they wanted $400 for a $130 wheel bearing for my car.

Not many shops out there willing to work on a 4th gen LT1 car these days. It takes twice as long to do a head gasket on an LT1 than an LS1.

Ellis at Speed Secrets still owns two LT1 Camaros (his and his wife's). He won't do you wrong. Also maybe time for new ported heads while you are at it too?

Hmm, I'll check out Speed Secrets next week when I have some time off of work. As for the heads, assuming the block isn't cracked (no idea if it is or isn't) then I had actually planned on having the stock heads ported and polished while they're off.

Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for if I decide to attempt this myself?

It's not hard there are plenty of write ups on it. There is a heads and Cam one that is pretty good. Its a tight fit and PITA but doable.

I'll sell an LT1 to LS1 conversion to either of you. All the guess work is gone
