Default Thoughts on Snohomish County

Any of yall live within Snohomish County? Planning on applying with Sheriff dept there and wanted to see what you all think of the area. I know everyone on here hates cops, but what is the general perception of the Sheriff's department?

Actually, the Sheriff's and County cops are cool around here and have never given me any undue grief. It's the small town ones that have the bad rap.

How is the cost of living there? Houses reasonably priced, or can I expect to pay $150,000 for a shoe box. Should be heading over there last week of March to start my testing.

cost of living isn't the greatest. depends on where in snohomish county you get a place. count on 150K at least if you are buying.

Well Seattle and the Eastside of Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah are pretty high housing markets. The further north or south you go the better.
I really don't know the market in Snohomish but $150,000 probably not going to go very far.

Well for $150K expect to spend another $30 to fix it. IF you can even find any thing that cheap. $200k is a entry level point here unless you want a Condo

Wife and I searched for three four month's before we decided on the place we have. I am Glad we choose this house but DAMN! That is one big *** check every month!

Let me know how it goes, I have a couple of good friends that work for the SO as patrol deputies and another that works in the jail. Are you challenging post or are you a street hire? I think of one them is a FTO now so you'll probably meet if you get hired. Good luck.

I wish I could challenge post, but don't think that is an option. I've been a cop in the military for the past 9 years and know some states will allow us to challenge post, but I don't think Wa is one of them. So I'll have to do it the old fashion way.

If you dont want to deal with alot of big city areas you can always check out the other counties around here. Thurston county has a good department & for a new house you can expect to spend alot less unless you want to live in Olympia or even Lacey (you are about 1.5 hours from seattle).

Where I live at its out in the middle of nowhere & we paid 120k for our house with land (well if you call 1.1ac land) We have cops that live all around us here as well.

Or Bellevue cops.

Yeah, $150K won't go far here. $200K really doesn't go far, either. This area is pretty overpriced, and it just keeps going up. Depends on where you live... The north end is definitely cheaper than Seattle or the Eastside.. Out where I am (North Bend), you'd have to plan on $300K as a starting point. We couldn't find crap for less than that... everything we found was either in a total hellhole neighborhood, or was so run down we woulda had to spend another $40K making it liveable.

It cost us $306K for a 1500 sq foot house in good shape on 1.04 acres, only about 2/3 of it usable.

Sno county cops are decent, though... I never really had any troubles with them.

They allowed one of my friends to do so, he was post certified here in Montana. I don't know about military certs. They say that department is very good to work for.

My old man is the Chief at Edmonds PD so I will ask his opinion of that S.O. for ya. He has always been a straight shooter with me about places so when he gets back from Quanitco after this week/end, I will call him up & ask if you want.

On a semi-side note....you guys are KILLING me saying that 250-300k is expensive. Down here, a dump costs half a mil minimum and that is in a crappy area.......GOD how I hate L.A.

Yeah, a certified civilian cop with x amount of years experience is usually allowed to challenge post anywhere he goes. Only a few states that extend that curtiousy to military cops. The one big thing pissing me off so far is that I can't claim veteran points. What kind of BS is that? Because I'm still in the military, I'm not a veteran. Even though I will be out, and officially a veteran, when I actually start an academy. Just kind of erks me.

Sounds like typical Govt-type BS.

I wanna live in King.

45 minute commute to downtown Seattle during rush hour, 30 minutes to PacRac, and 20 minutes to Snoqualmie pass. Can't beat that. You won't see me in any of that Highway 2 or I-5 Southbound mess.... I-90 baby!

Then in a few years I'll use the equity on my house to buy a Z06.

Works for me.

I generally do not like the Snohomish Country Sheriff because they have been less than helpful when our house got broken into back in 98. Anyhow, not all cops are bad cos there is a few bad seeds in every profession. But being a L.E.O. is a tough job. Good luck.
