The down side is that you have to start part time. Part-timers who are willing to grab whatever is available can usually make 30+ hours/week. If you've been laid off/fired you can collect partial unemployment while working part time to make up some of the difference. By the time your unemployment runs out you should be well on your way to full time and a notch up the pay scale.
