Depends on what you want the car to do. HALs are the best for drag racing. Konis & Bilsteins are the best choice for road racing & daily driving. Might just as well spend another $200 & do the springs while you're there (you have to take the front ones off anyway) & get a full suspension upgrade. Provided your car can handle a 1" drop - SLP headers = NO!

My headers already scrape the driveway.Would 17" wheels make the suspension upgrade possible?

Whether you run 16 or 17" rims, you'll still end up with a 26" tall tire, so that doesn't matter. HALs cost $600 for all 4....not sure about the others.

If I were just wanting street shocks it would be Bilstein all the way. They are a little softer and more compliant than the Koni's. Koni's are a little harder edged, but definitely the best for handling, also much more $$ Stranoparts.com is a good place to get both brands at a very fair price, though I forget exactly how much they are.

I had the regular Bilsteins put on 6 months ago and they are great. They are about $300 for a set and I am on the stock springs. Not sure how your headers are(have FLP LT's and the Y hangs a little low on 1 side), and I scrap a little even on the stock springs(some speed bumps and high peaking driveways, auto car wash etc), so no way I will get lowering springs, also you have the ground fx like me and makes the car look lower. I looked into the setups and the guy who knows alot about suspension(strano) said the springs are really not bad in the fbodys, it is the shocks that are crap. Car is a little firmer in ride quality, but nothing bad and takes corners much better. Strano has the regular Bilsteins and the revalved ones if you use lowering springs. I bought my regular Bilsteins off ebay from performance warehouse and they were $300 shipped.

I got my front Bilstiens off eBay and the rears from Linginfelter (or was it the other way around?) Anyway, I think I paid less than 400 for all four. I bought Boyce's Eibach pro-lines for 200 and could not be happier with the combination. It takes a little getting used to but once you are used to the ride you will never go back to stock. I would definately do the springs at the same time because you are there anyway and why tear it all apart again later when you decide you want to upgrade?

One thing to remember -- I have a 99 convert too so I know what I am talking about here -- our asses are a bit heavier than the hard top's. The spring set-up is a bit different too. I swear my but sits just a bit lower than the front of the car does. I notice it when I am washing it and it is harder to get the sponge around the rear wheel wells than the front ones. Also the Bilstien/Pro-Line combo dropped the car about 2 full inches, where as all the reports said 1.25 at most. That may be for a hard top but the converts are a bit different. I would also recommend an anti-squat kit - especially because it is a convertible. There are a number of them out there and they do do their job.

I have mid-length headers because the lt's would be too low. As it is I scrape over EVERYTHING. But it is worth it. You just learn to deal with it.

I had the SLP Bilsteins, they are nothing compared to the Koni's IMHO. You can get used bilsteins and have them re-valved or buy Stranos re-valved. Probably all cheaper than Konis Sa's@$768 delivered now a days. The best price I found on them was from a non sponsor. As far as ride differences the Bilsteins were a little soft. A friend told me that what he felt in the ride was that with the Konis on it didnt feel like the *** end was going to slide out when I corner. He was always a passenger. I have them set kind of in the middle. Car handles great and the ride is not harsh at all. I think Stranos re-valved bilstens are in the 550 range not sure but Sam Jr is great to talk to, he knows his stuff for sure he's been big help to me, he wont try to sell you something you dont need, a true honest guy. The Bilsteins had a nice ride to them but would show their deficientcy(sp) when driving agressively. The Konis improved the handling over the Bilsteins by a good margin. Its a personal choice as to how you drive your car. IF I was a 1/4 miler I'd go with the Hals. I'm using the same SLP pro rate springs that came with the car. I had the SLP sport suspension.

If your planning on Hals in the future it wouldnt make a whole lot of sense to invest in Koni's now. You can get a good deal on Bilsteins as the other have stated or even a used set of Bilstiens, which I have in my possesion, for even cheaper.

For a DD, Konis SA. I have them on all 4 corners, it's night and day compared to the stockers.
