Default Pump gas go bye bye........

Well, the days of pump gas for me are OVER. I have been trying to figure out what is going to be the best way for me to tune my motor for some time now. My main concern is the quality of fuel for the amount of compression I am running on the new motor. I wanted to keep the O2 sensors because they are a great tuning tool. But 104unl. just isnt going to cut it, not enough octane.

After talking with a number of ORR guys that run DFI/Motech etc and Don the decision has been. I am going to go the leaded fuel route. 114 octane. We can completely get rid of the O2 sensors and have megasquirt control fueling and the factory ECU control ignition.

the only thing I really have to worry about are EGT's. And I am still trying to figure out what the best way to monitor that one is.

Anyways, just getting excited that things are finally making forward motion so I thought I would share.

You've got your hands full. Please post as many detaisl as you can stand as you work through the build and tuning. It would help out a quite a few people with similar hi-octane goals.

Good luck on the project!

What kind of compression are you looking at Corey?

Not with O2 sensors. If you run leaded fuel w/ them they dont last long (like under 100 miles). Denso makes a Lead "safe" O2 but from what I have read, they are not near as good as the factory ones, or they just dont sample as well. So rather than risk it with Denso O2's, I just wont run them at all.

Cool Boyce. In the next few months I'll be adding MSnS to my Volvo because running 10.2:1 isn't very attractive. I still haven't seen your car in person, can't wait to see it running . Good luck with your project!

Youre not really missing anything on the volvo. its a standard 850 T5, white and the only stuff I have done to it so far is the "stage 0". I have added all samco silicon vaccum lines and the Samco turbo line kit with a Autometer boost gauge. I have a MSD 6A and blaster coil waiting to co in but thats it.

what dynamic compression ratio are you looking at? If it's over 10:1 DCR then I can see leaded gas in your future. But if it's on the verge I think you'll be fine with 104 UNL.

Boyce, I really hope to see that Camaro run this year. It seems like this is the year everyone is trying new and improved things to their cars. I hope you can make this work.

Interesting. Safe to say you don't have cats either? Forgive my ignorance on this stuff, I grew up during the changeover from leaded to unleaded and heard so many myths, lies & BS about it I don't know up from down.

Sounds like you have a sweet setup in the works (like it isn't sweet already. )

welcome to the club boyce leaded gas rules! somebody makes a egt setup that runs 8 sensors, that are installed in the header tubes.

here are a few i found kind o pricy
http://www.biondoracing.com/DataRecorders.shtml

they also have some on jegs.

I run duel widebands installed pemantly in the collectors and then have them run the computer like the narrow bands. they seem to be holding up pretty well. of course you will be exposing them to alot more leaded gas at one time than i will. let med know what controll system you are going with cause i might go back to fuel injection........mybee, or you ould take the carb route and get the edelbrock control box for the ignition.

Doesn't somebody make 110 unleaded??

Chris has the 8 sensors on his headers for tuning his 63 Vette. Pretty damned slick.
