Default coil relocation

Anyone here move their coils to the firewall? (I know it was talked aboiut before but didnt know if anyone went with the firewall mount instead of the upper valve cover.) If so any issues with it? Where did you drill to mount them. Not gonna buy the TR kit but thinking about doing the same mod.

Hey I used an aluminum edge thing for 1/2" plywood to make the mounts. It is perfect size for the coils to sit off the firewall a little bit, and then you only have to drill 4 holes into the firewall to mount them. Was like $3 at the local hardware store. www.eric-o.com/images/volvo242/5-10-2006/

Wow.. what a steal haha. I also like how they add $20 for anything other than black.

Oh and also, if you need longer wires with the LS1 coil pack ends, www.kingsborne.com can set you up. I just got a couple kits for my Volvo 16V and had them extend the wires, and include 135º LS1 ends.

Now, correct me if I am wrong (which I consistently am) but isn't one of the benefits of the coil pack placement, the short distance the "spark" has to travel to get to the spark plug? Doesn't moving it make that a longer route, thereby decreasing the efficiency? I am in no way trying to put down the idea, as I think the coil pack thing looks ugly & am all for relocating it, but if it is better for performance (in the stock location)...........if not then disregard......but I had always heard that the shorter distance that the spark has to travel, then better.

Yep, the distrance travelled does effect the spark. They make 10.5mm wires to compensate for it. Decreasing the resistance increases the distance. OR at least thats the theory as I understand it. I know Tom is an electrical engineer and could answer this quesiton very easily. I will consult with him first to make sure.

Yes, longer wire increases the resistance, and a larger wire decreases it. Think of it like water moving thru a hose. I have mine relocated. The firewall brackets don't fit with my vavle covers, so they are someplace else. I bought the kit direct from Jay Fisher Pontiac.

any pics? where are they?

"On the F-Bodies we relocate the coils under the windsheild cowl, where they are barely visable, all you see is a clean, machined billet plate after finial assembly."

isnt that where the other kits locate them?
