Default A little tech help, please

I am helping a neighbor who owns an SUV with a V6. It looks like a SBC with two cylinders cut off. I need to find TDC on the balancer. I found the sharks tooth timing flange, but the balancer has two grooves in it. Are one of these grooves TDC? -or are other marks present but too dirty to see? Please tell me what to look for.

Thanks in advance.

Buy a Chevy?

God, timing marks, I barely remember. One of them should be 0*, and the other is what, 20*....40*. The sharks tooth is where you set the 0 mark, each step is...argh the pain....4*?

take out the number 1 spark plug and feel for when the air pushes out....when it stops it should be near top dead center.

you can also pull the distributor cap and look at that.

then clean up the balancer and see if that helps you out any.

IF it has a Distributor

I think the LT1 and Vortec V8 were the last ever...

Like he said pull the front driver side Spark plug and put your finger over it while some one bumps it

Before I stick my finger in the spark plug hole, I'd pull the valve cover and watch for #1 intake valve to open and close. But I wanted to avoid that task. They SUV is a 1990 and the engine is, I believe, a 4.3L. I was hoping for some clear timing marks but it sounds like I may have to do without. He took the dist out and put it back in with no reference at all. I need to get it in the right spot. Mark, yes, the teeth each represent 4* but I need a known reference mark on the dampner.

Thanks for your help. It sounds like I am going to need to pull the valve cover and go from there.

Are the two grooves TDC and 40*? They are roughly the right distance apart for that.

Which one? There is a two pronged connector behind the dist. Is that it?

Gm likes to hide these connectors, I have had to cut open the harness under the dash to find it on some older GM trucks.
