Need a little help diagnosing my 4X4.
Well today I decided to put the truck in 4 wheel drive because of the snow and ice. Well the truck felt at times like it wasn't in 4 wheel drive.
Now the truck is a ford ( ) and its older, but the hubs sound like they lock and unlock like they are supposed to. I went out to the parking lot in the truck while it was in 4X4 high and tried to do a burn out. Now the truck is a one wheel wonder, I don't know if that affects the 4X4 or not, but thought it was worth noting.
So when I dropped the clutch the back tire spun pretty agressively, but the front didn't. What is the best way to tell if the 4X4 is working?
I was thinking of putting it on jackstands, putting the truck in 4X4 and checking that way. Is that a bad idea? or is there a better/easier way?

Doesn't sound like it.
While moving slowly on dry pavement, turn like you're going around a corner. The front tires should skip and jump if the 4x4 is working (you'll feel it in the steering wheel).

Sounds as if transfer case is not sending power to the front end. I have had this problem before. I had posi in the front and rear, ls5 454/turbo 400, 38.5" gumbo monster mudders in a 63 chev 4x4, the good old days.

Damn dude, that sucks. I know my jeep had problems with the 4x4 a couple of years ago when my inlaws still had it and it was a simple fix. I guess some vacuum tube came off the tranny and when he put it back on the 4x4 worked. Still think we need to line up the beaters. Your Ranger vs my jeep
