During the winter months I have been driving a 89' Grand Am with a 4 banger and 3 spd auto. Car just rolled over to 269k miles, and on the way to work this morning (269019 miles!) tranny shifted a few times, heard a snap, and lots of shaking. Was able to baby it up a hill I was on (reason for the downshift) and part it on a road and have coworker pick me up otw to work.
Could be a good learning experience to rebuild in my offtime on the weekends.![Winky](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_wink.gif)
269k miles on the tranny and never touched. Bought brand new when my dad was 25 IIRC in late 88', so no previous work done to it. It went through his heavy foot, when I turned 16, went through my heavy foot, then when brother turned 16, when through his heavy foot. Car was beaten to hell and still ran. Not bad for only haveing to pay $8500 OTD back in the day huh?
Looks like I get to drive in style in dads minivan for a week or so until I get My Probe re-registered.
Have pondered a L67swap(3.8 S/C), already have a 4T65-HD tranny I could bolt on, or find a Getrag 5-spd. Car is damn light, I am sure it could give my TA a run for its money with basic boltons.
So much for the crappy American cars...

Nevermind... Tranny is still good!![Thumb](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies2/thumb.gif)
Head gasket finally blew on the motor, dad said he knew it would happen eventually. Looks like I got the next two weekends booked up working on the cars. Got the Probe that I have to bang out the back end of and mount up the bumper stuff (got the taillights to line up at the expense of hurting my leg, will maybe start another post about that for comedy!
) and then change the head gasket on the car. Guess that means no snowmobiling until the end of the month.
