Cam swap help...
Does anyone have a valve spring compressor that I could borrow for a day or 2? I have a regular over the head type but it doesn't look like it will work on the last few right rear springs.....
Also what size rod do I need to buy to hold the lifters up. I don't want to chance just letting them hang there......
And lastly will a regular 3 arm pulley puller work on the crank pulley or is it a special one? I have a small, medium, and large 3arm pullers.
I got this motor down to just the crank pulley, valve springs right now but it's too freakin muggy out there to continue...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chad

I used to have a modified stamped style one for F-bodies. If you clearance it about halfway up and fold the handle 90 degrees it will clear the cowl. It is difficult to push and hold like that for some guys so eat your wheaties.
Good luck.

nope, stock crank pulley, all you need is normal three arm puller, it has three large slots in the pulley, and it has tabs on all three, you put the puller on the inside of the slots and locked it onto the tabs, real simple that way. And the valve springs??? What type of compressor you have, the seven dollar advance or autoone special? Teh one with the spinner on top? Or a breaker bar style? If it's the tighten down spinner style, it will fit, cause i did my first spring swa;p with that piece of crap, then i got smart for the second one and got a good one.

I have the type that has 2 arms that go under the springs, then it has a thing in the center that presses down on the retainer as you screw the center thing in. Make any sense? It's a POS but i've done lots' o valves with it. Just doesn't look like it will clear cowl on f-body.

Here's the rods you need. Pretty pricey at $94.

They have the F-body tools for the valve springs too if no one will let you borrow theirs.
Hopefully a seasoned tech will come in pretty soon so they can tell you what you need.

Dang, I forgot to give you the Larry Tool before I left. Sorry Chad! But you can go buy 2 5/16" rods from Home Depot & grind the pass side one flat a little to hold the lifters up.

Mark, no biggie. Ended up researching and 2' 5/16 rods from lowes worked just fine. Didn't even have to grind anything. Looks like the only thing I don't have in my tool collection is a nice spring compressor " I do have a crappy one" and a longer crank bolt for pulley reinstall.

Ellis, Thanks for the rundown on how to get that cover back on properly. I'm going to get it finished up tomorrow and get those tools back to you very shortly thereafter.

The part about tool is true - if you don't mind your front seal leaking. It's very difficult to get the front cover perfectly aligned, and it does need to be perfect or the seal gets wiped out. That's the difference between the "average Joe" and the pro.

I figured out a way to do the springs without a special compressor. I didn't get any pictures but here's what I did.
Right above the last 2 cylinders on the right side all I had to do was remove the plastic cowling....
Took my dremmel and cut away the metal that's above the heads and that gave me all the room I needed.
After I was done what I did was weld on a couple gate latches on the bottom so that in the future I have easy access again.
To get that crank pulley back on all I did was center it up on the crank and used a large socket and hammer and pounded it back on.
I got it all done tonight and just need to finish connecting my exhaust
