do not feel Bad Mikey. We had a 32in for over ten years before we bought our new TV

It is not the hottest thing on the market but it is just kick *** We actually compared it to many different models in person. Price was a factor but not as much as picture.

Hehe "our" tv is only 32", the only reason we have the 52" is our roommates bought it lol. That money would've gone into the car first if it was me hehe.

Question for you tech guys that I never got answered regarding these two formats.

Are they both backwards compatible to standard DVD? Meaning can I use any DVD from my collection of 400+ DVD's on either player? I never really found this answer.

I'm holding out on getting either one at this point, not having a HD tv of my own it isn't totally necessary yet.

Yes. All Blu-Ray or HD DVD machines will play old dvd's. They will even upconvert improving picture quality a little but still not true 720 or 1080 without the higher format discs.

Ha! That's the same thing I told my buddy who turned me onto that site. Between there, here and the German Shepherd forum I hang out at it's a wonder I get anything done at work.

Circuit city has a pretty good selection of movies for both formats.
I have the xbox 360 w/ the HD-DVD player attachment. The quality is really amazing. I have a Canon HV-20 1080i camcorder. I burn HD-DVD movies from this camcorder onto regular computer DVDs using a regular computer DVD-burner. It's pretty cool...though regular single-layer DVDs will only hold about 20 minutes of high def content. It's perfect for recording and editing footage of my baby boy.

Just buy a Combo Blue Ray/HD-DVD player and call it a day.

And the 1080p crap is just a way to sell the films.
It just means the movie runs in 1080 X 1920 pixels progressively.
All HD movies are still 1080p-24, or shot at 24 frames a second, @ 30 Hz.

REAL 1080p would be 1080 X 1920 pixels at 60hz, and 60 frames per second.

I was reading up on upcoming movie releases, and something that would give HD-DVD the one up on Blu-Ray...

There are sets that do different frame rates, not many but a few. The pic difference, unless you have a golden eye, is minimul according to reviewers.

Oh, yea, your dvds will look much better on a 780p set compared to standard dvd in 480p.

Yeah but why would they need to go higher when the human eye can't really distinguish above 30fps? 60fps would just be more space it would need to take up that isn't needed.

I have a Samsung 50" DLP 1080p HD unit. It has awesome picture quality, especially coupled with my HD DVD player.

And I too am looking forward to Transformers on HD... that movie was awesome!

I got the HD DVD for Xbox 360 last night. Drove to Auburn Hollywood Video to rent some, because no other store around here rents them. I was kinda disappointed to see less than 50 HD titles available, and maybe 100 on Blu Ray. I guess that's how it goes with new stuff. Blockbuster carries only Blu Ray, so the current market looks to be leaning that direction. Maybe I can use that as an excuse to get PS3 and Gamefly for Christmas?

The movie looked real good, it was called Next with Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel . It still had black bars on the top and bottom. The movie is formatted for 1080p and our set is 720p, but the picture was excellent. I wonder what difference a 1080p screen would bring?

The player cost $179 at BestBuy, and comes with 1 HD movie (King Kong). There is a coupon for 5 more HD movies, but you have to pick from their list of 15 titles. That's linda lame but heck its free. Oh yeah, we're getting a copy of Transformers next week for sure!

Yeah the black bars still depend on the format the movie was shot in. Hence why when you go to see a movie they adjust the screen to fit whatever movie is playing. (either by moving the side curtains or they'll have a black section at the bottom that will move up and down). Some will fill the whole screen and others will still have some bars.

I think a 360 HD-DVD player is next on my list because of transformers... then we'll have both blu-ray and HDDVD lol.
