Default M9 Install

And so it begins.....I got the easy part done this morning. Now to transfer the brakes & start cutting & beating on the underside of the car. Hopefully I'll get that done & hang the new rear end today.

Are the hard mounts in the same relative location? So it's just making it fit so the tires and everything will actually mount in the wheel well?

Beautiful piece.

Really, you mean there is (was) another CRAZY person around here?

And for anyone that's interested, my old 9" weighs around 265lbs, and the M9 weighs around 215 without brakes. Should = ~40lbs weight savings with all the metal I just cut off the car.

BTW on the plane yesterday I had some time to read the M9 install article. Make sure you check for gas tank clearance

I think all you have to cut is the bump stop mount. Now that Ellis is here to give me a hand hanging it I'll find out. It's a little more unsteady that the regular 9"....no big flat spot for the jack.

My old 9" is in great shape, and it's already sold. Sorry.

Ellis & Chad stopped by to help with the install and we get her hung on the car. The good news it looks nice & it appears my tires will fit. The closet item are the LCAs, the stock ones just touch the tires & the BMRs are 1" narrower.

The bad news is the fill cap & the ABS sensor (located on the top angle of the housing) hit the gas tank long before the rear end is all the way up. (see the last 2 pics) We'll see what Moser says.....may have to re-do the gas tank / fuel system.

I temporarily put some factroy LCAs on cuz Chad is getting my old BMRs Boyce. They will be replaced. I outgrew the factory suspension parts LOOOOONG ago.

Regarding the fuel tank issue, Bob at EPP runs a fuel cell, so he didn't see this problem with his car. The Moser reps Danny @ NW Dif is talking to have never heard of it. They want me to measure the pinion angle to see if that might be the problem (it's at their default install angle now).

Not sure where this will end up, and I'm certainly not trying to give Moser any bad press! I have nothing but good things to say about their products and they are talking to Danny trying to figure this out. But since some of you are watching I want to provide info in case someone else is planning to buy an M9.

We'll get there, but I'm not going to be pleased if the solution is having to rip out my brand new $1500 fuel system & replace it with a different brand new $2500 system! Cuz I shot my wad on the M9.......off to measure the pinion angle for Moser.

looking at the picture I don't think pinion angle is going to solve your problems.

It didn't. But not wanting to yard out the gas tank I started looking at the geometry & parts that might get me some room.

So I turned the top rod end on the torque arm in ALL the way. Which gained me about 1" at the top of the rear end, right where I needed it. Then with the pinion angle correct (it was off about 10*) the sensor JUST clears the tank. The draw back was that meant I had to hammer the bottom TA bolt in, which of course buggered it and now it's locked about 5 turns into the nut. (3/4" HARDENED bolt ) And I'm sure that puts extra stress on the torque arm too.

I'm going to to lossen the gas tank straps & slide it over to the pass side to get some more room, and reverse the sensor so the wires exit the other side. I'll also have to make a slot in the cross member instead of the hole I drilled....

I forgot to mention that part, and this might be the other key issue here. They evidently sent me a cross member for a TH400 or a 6sp. Not sure what it's for, but the hole for the tranny mount was at least 1" too far forward. And now the slider on my torque arm is jammed tight.

Anyway, my solution is better than GM High Techs was (welding brackets on the housing to engage the bump stops earlier = NO suspension), or replacing the fuel tank & pumps. And in the end it might even work.

Danny is talking to Moser about what the final solution is. We'll see what they say.

Damn looking at the before and after pics of your abs sensor it sure looks like you tilted / moved the rear end back a bunch. My suspension pieces FINALLY shipped today. Scheduled to be on my doorstep next Tuesday.

When you get a few minutes why don't you take a peek and verify your driveshaft will still fit.......
