Low Oil Pressure At Idle In Gear Old Pontiac
**Posting this here since it gets more hits than the Legends site**
Overhauled traditional Pontiac 467 by DG Machine.
Primed with Brad Penn 30wt break in oil
Napa Gold Oil Filter
Oil pressure out of gear: cold 80+lbs / hot 20+lbs
Oil pressure in gear: cold 30+lbs / hot gradually declines down to 6lbs then I turn engine off or slight rev to increase oil pressure.
Previous issue: http://www.northwestlegends.com/foru...ead.php?t=2953
Replaced the previous oil filter housing adapter that had the pipe plug in it with another housing that has the bypass spring, suggested by DG. I primed the engine by checking for oil through the pushrods. Fired engine, ran very rich and adjusted timing/carb. AFR on wideband is in the mid 13's at idle. Vacuum is very low; bounces between 6 - 8 in-Hg. Idle in gear is between 800-850 rpm. Idle out of gear 950-1000rpm. Drove car around for break in 3/4 throttle uphill then back down the hill letting engine do the braking. Oil pressure fine when driving or any increase in rpm.
Noticed oil pressure slowly declining while sitting in gear at idle for over 1 minute. Oil pressure gauge is a electric Cyberdine unit installed on oil filter housing adapter. Added a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the housing adapter as well to compare numbers. Both were consistent with each other.
Noticed some oil puddling around the distributor and a bit sprayed on the firewall behind distributor. Pulled distributor and noticed the valley pan is leaking in the back.
Questions:
1) Will the oil leak at the rear of the valley pan cause low oil pressure?
2) Will the oil leak at the rear of the valley pan cause low vacuum?
3) Should I drain the Brad Penn 30wt break in oil and replace with a heavier multiweight oil?
4)Would the spring in the oil filter housing adapter be too weak/strong and cause odd oil pressure at idle in gear?
5) Any other suggestions upon troubleshooting this issue?
Thanks in advance.

sorry to hear Jasin, seems like you're always havin problems with the drunken indians--did you post this question in the internal engine, or BBC section? they might be able to help out as well, hope you get it fiqured out, low oil pressure isnt cool.

Since it's a fairly new motor I won't say cam bearings. The spring in the pump might do it. Does it have a monster cam in it? Big lope seems to kill idling oil pressure....and try to stop ALL the oil leaks.

The oil pump is the Melling M54-F which is the 80lb'er. My due diligence shows that sometimes the check ball in the oil pump may be stuck. The cam is a solid roller 244/242 - 577/571 on a 106.5 LSA.

Coffee break
Four surgeons were taking a coffee break and discussing their work. The first one said, "I think accountants are the easiest to operate on. Everything inside them is numbered.""I think librarians are the easiest," said the second. "When you open them up, all their organs are arranged alphabetically."The third surgeon said, "I prefer to operate on electricians. Their organs are color-coded."..World Of Warcraft gold is WoW gold."You're all wrong," said, the fourth. "Lawyers are easiest. They're heartless, spineless, gutless, and their heads and asses are interchangeable."
