Default Looking for a five speed for a third gen Camaro

Anyone maybe have one of these laying around I could snag from you or know of a place to start looking? Brother just got done putting a 350 in his Camaro and the 700r4 in it doesn't really like the new engine. I guess he goes WOT and it shifts at 3k rpm and goes to neutral. I tried to tell him we could rebuild it or put something else in but manuals are always faster or something.

Any direction on where to get one would be appreciated.

Or he could have hooked the TV cable up

Best bet is a new TKO. Those were not the best 5spd units even behind a 302 or 305.

He would be better off to get a T56 for a manual.

Still waiting for the fasterr Manual They are more 'Fun' though

How easy would it be to get a T56 to bolt up? As long as I am thinking right this morning... that is our 6 speeds right? Would he need an adapter plate or anything and how about electrical? The father-in-law is under the belief that carb'd and no electrical other than your key to the motor is the best way to go, and gas is a renewable resource!

I have looked around for a T-5 but they seem to always be part of a whole parts car, which mama won't let him get one, or people want something like $700 for them. Could have sworn I have seen T-56 trannies go for the $500 range or even less sometimes. The motor is out of a 78 Corvette IIRC. If there would be no bolt-up issues with it I am sure I can convince him to go that route rather than a T-5.

Pretty sure they bolt up directly. Just have to deal with clutch hydraulics if they're different, add a switch to let it engage in reverse and verify driveshaft.

Ellis will chime in soon and set it straight tho

not trying to spread mis-information but if he is using a stock third gen driveshaft with the 700r4 shouldnt it work with the t56 as well. If i remember correctly the driveshaft length is the same in the third and 4th gens and that includes 700r4 4l60e and the t5 and t56 transmissions.

if I am wrong let me know and i will delete this post.

DS is the same length.

What you'll need to swap will depend on whether you use an lt1 t56 or ls1 t56. I've got an lt1 t56 in mine and just used all stock lt1 style stuff. Clutch, fork, hydraulics, etc with a conversion x-member. Although had I the chance to do it again I wouldn't have used the lt1 stuff. I've already snapped one fork in half. If the motor is a 78 you'd need a conversion flywheel and larger pilot bushing as well.

May be a little easier going the ls1 t56 route (and safer). You can use a standard old school small block clutch setup (which is SO much cheaper than lt1 reverse stuff) with a McLoed adapter plate and Lakewood scatter shield. Then you can run the original hydraulics.

The year of the Camaro will also detirmine how hard the electrical side will be. The reverse light is easy, just splice on the new connector. 90+ camaros use an electrical vss while the older ones still used a cable. Dakota Digital makes a conversion box if you've got an electric vss. Which is simple to wire in; power, ground, signal in, signal out. If cable, I have no idea. I'd imagine you could swap clusters? Then there's the reverse lockout 'noid. I wired it to my brakelight switch so I have to be on the brakes to go into reverse.
