I can give you a basic idea... but i need some info first...

1 - how is the paint on the hood now? is it chipping/flaking/blistering anywhere at all?

2 - is there any bodywork that needs to be done? (bondo/glaze work)

3 - are you taking the hood off or trying to do this on the truck?

4 - are you looking to do a really good thorough job, or just get a decent paint job with as little as possible?

1-the hood is the same black color as when it arrived at my door, i wouldnt say primer, but its not chipping, flaking, or blistering.

2-no bodywork needs to be done. but was wanting to know so i could paint my T/A when i get one. paint the whole car not just the hood. but no work on the hood to be done on the truck

3-i was going to take the hood off to do it since i have the stock hood and can put it back on. the hood ill be painting is a 2" cowl hood.

4-yes, i want to do a really good thorough job on it since this will be practice for me, for when i get a T/A and get ready to paint it.

that good enough answers for ya?

That black is not paint. Its actually a etching primer that they put on from the company to prevent rusting. I've heard many ideas how to go from here but what I do is sand it with 400 grit but not to the metal just scuff it up and spray 2K epoxy primer over it. Then wet sand that with 600. Then the color. I want to warn you though if you have never really painted silver is going to be a bitch to match to the rest of you car. There is a lot of factors that can affect it air pressure number of coats. Plus silver and like gray colors the metallics like to bunch up on you and look kinda like dark spots. I really think if you have never done anything like this you might want to give this project to a pro or somebody that you can't point a finger at. I know if you never do it you will never learn but its not cheap to learn by error.

yeah, your right, i heard silver was hard to paint with. i have a couple vehicles i can practice on and it wont matter thats why i was wondering how to do it step by step so i could practice with them first and if i see that i just couldnt make it look right then i wouldnt attempt it because i dont really wanna spend 2-4k for a paint job or more.
