Anyone out here with personal experience with roll on rustoleum paint?

I've got a 1995 formula with the chameleon paint. Reason's why i'm considering the cheap repaint:
-Don't want to spend a lot of money (don't trust macco or any paint job that doesn't provide a lifetime warranty)
-From 10 ft car looks fine, but everytime I wash it I notice tons of small scratches, spiderwebbing, little dents I'd like to take out, some bubbles, chips and other crap from being 14 years old.
-Might be getting a new hood (ram air) and it would need to be painted.
-Want a project to take on this summer.

Things I'm concerned about:
-Rustoleum paint (http://rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=130) is meant for metal so I'm not sure if it will work on all the fiberglass body panels.
-Heard it fads and looks chalky after a year or so (i've seen some cars that look great years later in some writeups so I think it jsut might be the amount of effort in the prepwork).
-Haven't seen it done on a firebird so I'm not sure how it would work on all the curvy body panels

Let me know your thoughts, also, replies along the lines of investing in a paint gun and going that route aren't going to help me much, I have no intention of spraying it myself. I'll be doing this outdoors so spraying is out of the question.

What do you think, worth doing, or no shot in hell?

Keep in mind, those photos are the most flattering i could take of the car, it was dusk and i just got done washing and waxing it. Not a real representation of what it looks like in person.

 

ive done roll on paints and cheap sprays....the roll on if done right will look good at like 10 feet away....so your still in the same boat.....up close you will see runs, and doing it outside is also not a good idea. wind will make the paint run worse and dirt and bugs will settle inside....honestly the cheapest route i would tell you to go is rustoleum paint thinned out and applied through a gun (i know you didnt wanna hear that sorry)

 

As far as doing it outside goes, I don't think i'll have to worry much abotu wind, the area i'm doing it in has walls about 5 feet tall around three sides, and i'll put a tarp over it (not touching it) after each coat to minimize crap falling in it. I just feel i'd still get a ton of dust and crap from the air in the paint if i sprayed it.

Yeah I am going to agree with these guys, I've seen roll on jobs, and while they look OK on something like a rat rod, they still look pretty crappy. If you are going to go through the trouble of putting a tarp up, put one under it as well then you don't have to worry about kicking up dust. IMO, even a lil dust in some BC/CC through an HVLP gun would still look 100x better than roll on anyways, if you are careful about it you won't even have that.

 

i came across this on honda sight once; its looks surprisingly good, but then agaiin, i wouldnt use it on anything but a crappy daily driver. let me see if i can find you a link

Seems you would better off either getting a cheap job done some or getting a compressor and spay gun and give it a go yourself.

I think even rattle can would be a better option than rolling.

(Seems that roll job has a LOT of labor tied up in it that could be avoided with a spray job.)

I think you would be better off not doing anything as opposed to rolling.

 

dont degrade your car by doing a roll-on paint job. i'd rather live with some scratches than a trailer park paint job. the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be just touch up the chips and buff the hell out of it..... or do a satin black rattle can job, but that's starting to get played out.

Roll on - Really. . . . . I rather have weathered paint that was good at a point of time then paint that was never good to start with.

I had enough cars that the previous owners decided to spray themselves or take in for a 200 Dollar spray.

 

spend the money and go to Maaco, you'll be happier down the road.

buy single stage and a gun.. for around 100 bucks including gun, no wetsanding, no clear, only a good prep you get this...



orange peel city at 1 foot away but 5 foot and back shes super clean



remember.. no buffing.. no color sanding.. no clear

your in texas...Ill spray it for you since your not to worried about 10 feet haha...just buy the materials. plus ill do a little airbrushing i guess...think about it...
roll-on paint i dont think will look good.
