I did a targa on my old 99z about ten years ago, and drove it every day for years... Even across the country on
the Power Tour. No sag. It's the same chassis as a convertible.

^^^^^^please tell me you have pics, tips, detailed instructions lol I really wanna targa my car before it goes to paint...also how will chassis flex be launching at the track its got subframes and a Wolfe 6 point

If you search my name and targa you should find plenty on it. I wouldnt do it if the car was a track car, only a street car. Not that you couldnt do it, but pick what you want the car to do and build it accordingly.

Is it just as easy to do a t top conversion on a 1978?

Cut the roof off of your car. Cut the roof off of a donor second gen with t-tops and weld it on yours. For second and third gens that's pretty much all you can do if they weren't modified from the factory. The fourth gen was the only one that was designed from the factory to be a T-Top. All other generations were add-ons.

Really I'd rather have a hard top car, but I like track time and it makes me feel safer.
