Default For those who have painted their cars...

how much paint (unreduced) did you need to do the whole car? Jambs and under the hatch area as well will be painted. I was going to buy a gallon, but somebody told me that 2 quarts should be enough. Sooo.... any advice would be great. Thanks!

This is like asking what is the standard size of a 2x4.

There are so many variations to answer this question accurately.

Are you painting the car the same color or is it a color change??
Are you planning on sealing the car first??
The type of spray gun will affect the material usage, and even with two identical spray guns, two painters can set the gun up differently and use different amounts of paint.

Also depends on the type of paint. I can tell you from experience a gallon of Nason doesnt go as far as a gallon of Glasurit.

Color will play a factor too, some colors just take more coats to cover.

2-3 qts should do it depending on your setup

i almost always buy a gallon of paint for a allover because if you have a sand through or burn you always have extra paint to redo and its going to match. i just ordered 2 gallons of paint to do a gmc crew dually color change plenty of paint to do it but its a odd color coverage might be a issue plus guy uses truck so damage is in its future

I'm planning on repainting my car in the next few years. My dad works for an automotive paint supplier and he suggested I get a gallon. I'll be painting EVERYTHING. Not only the jambs, under hood / hatch; but the interior metal, underbody, engine bay, etc. When I'm done there won't be a trace of NBM anywhere. He said a gallon will be enough with a bit left over for later touch-ups.

-it is a color change (minus the engine bay because I just dont have the time to do that part at the moment)
-yes, the car will be sealed first
-I will be basing with a sata 3000 RP gun and Sherwin Williams paint
-I will be painting the car a darker color, on top of different dark color

I guess I will just get pricing for 3 qts and a gallon, and go from there
