Unhappy WTF is This????

Well, I'm in the process of painting my car and today I uncovered a dirty little secret on the passenger door. Below are pics I took in sequential order while sanding.

My questions:
1. WTF is that in the last pic? Is it some sort of patch panel?
2. I thought bondo was only supposed to be used on bare metal. Why was it used on the door's SMC? And what is the white filler in the second pic?
3. It is surprisingly smooth without any type of bondo. Could I just prime over what is in the last pic and sand the primer?

?dont know what u have in the last pic. you can put filler n puddy over smc panels, you can primer 2-4 coats then block it down to see if you need any filler or not then prime n block again. block the primer the first time with 220,the second time with 320,then 500 wet,i would primer n block it twice anyway to help get the choppyness out that they have from factory, exspecialy if your car is black

I don't think its bondo cause it's not sandable. i.e. when I sand it nothing is removed.

Thanks! Would you recommend reassembling the car before block sanding? It seems like this would be the best way to do it but don't know if it would be worth the extra effort.

No,I would block it down first then hang the door(atleast the first time u block it)don't put any of the belt moldings n stuff on until after it's painted, unless your waiting till paint it down the road,if thats the case I would put some sealer on it also to keep moisture out(sometimes moisture will get in between primer)

Why not block it assembled? Would that not help even out the body panels and help them transition better?

it might help, and if your fixing the quarter panel or fender i would deffenatly do it with the door on the car.since you have the door off the car its just easier to block it at least the first time off the car.then you can reprime it then hang it back on then block it the second time, but like i said if your fixing the quarter and/or fender i would do all the blocking n body work with the door on the car.
