my door is starting to split down the inside of the door jam and i was wondering how i should get it fixed. its kind of hard to explain so ill just show a pic.

i've heard people say i could just fix it with some simple epoxy but i'm not sure. i think welding will melt the paint on the otherside. just wondering how you guys think i should fix it....what products and such.

 

I think welding won't work at all, you have to have metal first......

negative. It is mostly if not all fiberglass.

 

Both pieces are fiberglass. Get a little can of bondoglass at Autozone or Pepboys.

Take off the door panel.
Using the course sand paper, scuff up and then clean the inside of the door where the 2 pieces come together.

Mix the bondo glass, put it on. Hold the door together with some c clamps while it dries.

 

Absolutely do not use BondoGlass, or any polyester fiberglass for that matter. The repair will be temporary and it will make a good repair difficult later.

Get some 2 part epoxy glue, or epoxy resin and a pair of vise grips. Panel bond adhesive works great too if you have a friend that works at a body shop.

Put a few layers of tape on the edge of the paint so that you protect it from glue and clamp marks. You may want to put some cardboard on top of the tape as an extra layer of protection for the paint.

Blow out any loose fiberglass strands that may have broken off off either side.use something along the lines of a plastic disposaple knife to push glue as far into the crack on both sides as possible.

Clamp the door with the vise grip (You may want to use 2 of them) Dont forget to protect the paint on the outside from clamp marks. Wipe off any excess glue and let it sit overnight and you should be good!

+11111 on the panel bond. As long as you clean the surfaces and clamp it, you will never get that door apart, LOL. I dripped some on the shop floor and when it dried I chipped it off and is pulled the concrete up with it, **** is right. The only problem is you need a $55 gun to apply it, so your best bet is a friend in a body shop.

 

Get a tube of PL Premium Advance at home depot or lowes. My passenger side door skin is basically held on by this. It hardens like a rock so dont get it on the paint.

 

i went ahead an got some 3500 psi plastic and metal 2-part epoxy. it's drying as we speak and i'll see how well it holds. was kinda tough to get a lot of glue in there so i hope i put enough.

my cousin had the same issue. He panel bonded it. Its a VERY strong adheisive, the door will break somewhere else befor the panel bond fails.

 

Well if this epoxy doesn't work panel bond will be the next thing I purchase

 

whats left after a break in....he pried on the glass til the door busted and glass broke

 

3M smc epoxy.....good stuff !!!!
