Default Paint quote for hood

So, I have a VFN hood on order. I am comfortable painting small stuff or cars that are not "show" cars. Not so much big/show stuff. I have a friend who is an aspiring "Chip Foose", but I am picky and wanted to explore my option. So, I sent an email to a pseudo-local body shop that reportedly does great work.

"When painting a silver hood, you may need to blend into adjoining panels and clear. I would need to see the car and talk with you more in depth. The minimum that you are looking at would be $2500.00. Prep, tape up, seal, paint, clear coat and then wet sand & buff plus final clean up. We bill time and materials, so the nicer you want it the more it costs. Please call me if you have any questions or would like to stop in for a shop tour."

Now, I deleted names. I know good materials are expensive, and these hoods need work to fit/finish. I just was not expecting that much. Am I insane, or ????

That is absolutely insane. I would attempt to paint it in a sand storm before I paid that.

$2,500 to paint a hood? My car is black yes but I was only quoted $450 to paint the top and bottom of the hood by my body shop. That includes all the things you listed.

The quotes was the shop owner's email to me minus his demo's... I was thinking $500 was going to be the answer. I almost dropped my phone.

There is a shop with a paint booth north of me that did some work to my wife's car. Paint matched perfect. Amount of dust in paint (minimal for a dd) and repair of collision damage were not to my liking. I would have taken back but way out of my way. So I disconnected hatch open switch and called it a day. My wife has been good with it so all good.... I was half tempted to see what he would give me for a quote as he honestly does have a good reputation.....and everyone that has dealt with him says he is a good guy.

Hmmm...

That does seem way overboard. I just got quoted for my superhawk hood, $275 for the top only prep and paint, $60 to color match the bottom without prep or about $600 for prep and paint on the whole hood. Going to do the latter option soon hopefully. These guys painted my old suncoast hood which came out near perfect so hopefully soon I'll be able to say the same about my new hood.

I am getting my whole car painted at a quality shop with a lifetime warranty for $3300 right now. So yes I would say that is way to high haha I was quoted like $1000 to paint the whole front end and blend the doors also but decided I wanted to make the whole car look really really nice. $2500.00 YUCK. Shop around.

Default paint quote for hood

Hello, I paint for an inde shop and our rates are 44$ an hour. It would be 3hrs top and 1.5 bottom and for perfct color match on hard colers it would be 1hr per fender. So at most 6.5 x 44 plus materials, at most 600$ using Sherwin Williams ultra 7000 system. Hope that helps. Ron T.

Oh, I didn't even respond. It would have started with F U.

My buddy and I will be painting it and putting enough clear on to sand and buff the hell out of it....unless I go see someone close that I am considering. But no f'ing way $2500. ESP when I read the VFN stuff is almost perfect to being with....
