Default SS Hood vs Z28 Hood Weight?

Hi,

Looking to get an OEM SS Hood for my 2002 Z and I was curious what the difference is in weight.

I've read that the SS is more, that the SS is less, and that the SS is about the same which pretty much covers all the options, so if anyone with actual weights could chime in, I woudl appreciate it.

Good to know. I'm not doing this for weight reduction, but I would hate to do something that actually added weight to the car.

Thanks!

That's the kind of figure that worries me; it seem awfully light for a steel hood and I've heard that the SS hood uses pretty heavy duty SMC.

Anyone have a specific weight for the factory SS hood?

Looks like the steel hood is just slightly heavier than the SMC Super Sport Hood. I've carried both and the SS hood did feel lighter, but that may just be the placebo effect. I believed that the SMC hood would be lighter and so my perceptions when handling the hood made it seem that way to me to confirm my beliefs.

Thanks for providing this; I tried a search but didn't find this information.

Looks like the SS hood is not going to be good for weight reduction, but at least it's not a weight gain.

Hmm, that's interesting; one source shows the steel hood at 52 and now it's stated as 91 pounds.

I wonder if the quoted weight in the weight reduction thread fell victim to a keystroke error because 52 and 91 is a pretty significant difference. Just so I'm sure, you did mean to say 91lbs right tsteel1?

+1 I removed the stock z28 hood from my car by myself a couple times and it sure as hell doesn't feel like 91 pounds.

I take a lot of junk to the dump I have scale right in garage i've junked a couple of these hoods there right at 100lbs the person who said 42 come on they way more then a big bag of cat litter I can get the hood off by myself but its a pain without a second person they have a double layer steel frame in them I can tell you there is a weight reduction with the fiberglass aftermarket hood don't know with the factory SS one

Hmm, I wonder if the 51 lb quoted weight is accurate for the 98-02 SS hoods? Sounds pretty close to what you found for the 97 hood.
