Default filling in rock chips/dents

So my car has a handful of rock chips on the nose/hood, and a couple small dents on the quarters. I'm getting ready to wrap the car this summer, and I wanted to fix these imperfections before I start putting the expensive vinyl on.

Now, to fill these spots in, do I have to sand to bare metal and apply filler? Or can I scuff up the paint and apply the filler directly onto the paint? I'm not concerned about the look of the paint since the vinyl is going on top, I just want it smooth for the vinyl application.

Thanks guys

preferable not to hit bare metal for what you're doing. Just lightly sand to get adhesion & use a good quality glazing putty such as evercoat metal glaze or even their original # 400 glazing putty, then something of a spray can primer.

A good quality filler will stick to paint, crap like bondo brand bondo won't.

You could just sand the rock chips out, unless they have little dents you have to fill. Use a good metal glaze top coat and make sure whatever it touchs has a nice rough surface. Then put a quality primer over top of the top cost and any metal spots
