Default Por15 question

Who has used this on the under carriage? Want to apply it to my stock suspension parts. Do you have to buy the whole kit? Once I removed the old paint and flaking rust couldn’t I just use brake clean or something similar for a degreaser and apply the paint? Or are the Por degreaser and metal prep the only way the paint will last on the parts?

I've been using POR15 now for about 15 years. Rust is hygroscopic and pulls moisture out of the air. The moisture in rust is part of the curing process for POR15. Removing old paint and flaking rust is necessary. Any spots taken down to bare metal has to be 'rusted', easily done by wetting with water to attain that classic rust orange color.

Awesome reply thanks man! Ages ago I used several spray cans of undercoating on everything and it has slowly starting to come off. I plan on putting the Por15 on the undercarriage which has no rust so hopefully it sticks? About to read your threads...

POR15 needs some tooth to adhere well. I had peeling problems when I used it on new floors even though my prep was ****.

POR15 is not intended/designed/formulated to be used on bare metal and new panels.Bare metal and panels need to be etch prepped with their 'etching' formula.
When I use POR15 on freshly cleaned bare metal (steel and iron casting), I purposely wet it with water to let it 'rust' to form the rust orange patina.

That'll give it some 'tooth'. I have had great results with SEM Rust Shield.
