the deal on macco is that they don't pay their employees very much, more for starting out painters. So therefore the good guys don't work at Macco. Most of the time you get what you pay for when it comes to body work and paint.

I just started working at a Maaco in the 'prep' dept.
Yes, time is money to them, and yes, they pay low wages, and yes, they just mask off instead of removing stuff (unless its had bodywork done that required parts removal). And the bodywork guys get REAL good money, but its on a 'get paid on the work you do' basis.

All cars are sanded before paint, not just scotchbrite scuffed, then dewaxed before painting. If a car gets painted and its not right, it comes back to the prep and sanded again.
In the week i've been there, i've seen some really nice paint jobs and i'm waiting till it quietens down then I can get my Firebird painted (but I will be removing as much trim as poss first!!)

When I was in High School, I had a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. I had redone everything on it except the paint, which was so bad it wouldn't even polish up. My X decided to key it so insurance paid for a new paint job. I took it to Maaco and they did a great job. The only problem was that they used a unique paint. Aparantly back then (don't know if they do now) but they used individual batches of paint that were never the same (or so they said) so if there was any damage there was no touch up available. This was 1990 just for clarification so there were no computers to speak of. I have to say though that the paint job they did back then looks better than the one GM put on my TA...LOL

A friend worked at one in Central Fla.
They told him the allotted time to sand a complete car was......
12 minutes.
So I cant see how they can knock off so much on a price due to sanding being done ahead.
As far as the facility and the workmanship most do a good job.
They use cheap azz paint and no prep time but do a good job of layin it down.
If you roll the windows down they color the interior for you too.
P&B is like anything else you get what you pay for(or less).

just hope that you have someone there that really knows how to buff, cause black is the worst to buff. swirl marks show easily and scratches are harder to blend in.

No offense folks, but I'm going to close this poll {but the thread remains open}. The roof was painted a few weeks ago. We know that Maaco is not the ideal choice, but for some people, it just works.

Know a guy who had his fox body painted there. Looked great, very little orange peel. He just took all the trim and emblems off and it was like 700 to do the whole repaint.
