In a BC/CC system, is it typical for a base coat not to have a hardner?

Yes it is typical. I always add 10% hardner from the clear to any base coat and it makes it stronger and more chip resistant. It also gives it a longer recoat window.

yep very very typical that basecoats have hardners. the only time that basecoats usually have hardner is when your doing the engine bay, or the underside of the hood unless you want it cleared. usually it just has that satin look which is like basecoat with 10% hardner and 20% reducer. on most paints flash time for basecoat with reducer is about 5 to 10 minutes and cure time could be up to a day with some brands.

Is it normal for the base coat to still be tacky after an 45 minutes of dry time. This is my first BC/CC and The base is drying like I would expect a single stage paint to dry, hence the original question about hardner in the base .

No, you must have soaked it on there. It should be dry to the touch in a few minutes.

Are you still adding reducer? You still have to reduce it then you can add the 10%hardner if you like.

I reduced it by about 25%. I think I may have had the pressure a little too low and it did not atomize well. I'll try on another sample panel. Trying to get used to the Gravity feed HVLP gun vs my old suction gun.
Thanks much

Try setting the gun at 29psi with a wide open fan then go down if you need to.

Some of DuPont's newer base coats have hardener that go into it. But with regular chromabase, you mix it 1 to 1 with the right temp base maker/reducer. I spray around 20 to 30 psi through my sata jet hvlp gun.

With the clear you want to spray a little higher pressure due to the thickness of it. It helps atomize it better.
