for the Hub you mean? Wire brush it and mask the rotor surface then shoot some paint on them.

Wire brush and sand paper would be your best bet

can you simply paint on the braking surface then stop so it clears it off but leave only the part you brake on exposed?> or will the residue be bad for the pads/rotors?

Wipe them down with a wet Scotch-Brite pad. Dry and paint with any rust preventive paint. Did mine years ago with Rustoleum semi-gloss black. Also did the top hats as well. Still look great.

Daniel,

I would imaging you could do this without a problem if you simply changed rotors, got the paint off of them by stopping, then changed your pads immidiately. The pad is what is going to take the paint residue, not the rotor.

paint them and turn them. or in those drilled/slotted ones, paint them, put them on the lathe and just sand the paint off

I've taken rotors before and lightly sandblasted the rust off, then powercoat the whole rotor and then put the rotor on a brake lathe and clean off the contact surface.

I originally did the hats and edges of my rotors 6 yrs ago with brush on Rustoleum gloss black. Haven't had to touch them since. Did my rear axle at the same time. Not even any rock chips since.
