i truck undercoated mine with rattle cans and it still chips fairly easily and doesn't like oil or grease. i'd go with the por 15 for peace of mind

Damn they use a lot of salt up there huh? POR15 is supposed to neutralize the rust right? If so, I say go for it.

Ive used POR 15 on all my vehicles, especially on my jeep that sees mud and crap all the time.

I would go over any parts that have rust with this OSPHO, basically stops rust from spreading and then coat it with por 15all over it and it will give it a nice showcar look, since its underneath the paint will stay shiny black since the UV rays wont hit it. I would grind it down to metal and put a nice layer on it. it will look great and hold up without chipping. in our shop up here we call it liquid powdercoat. anyways man it will come out lookin good and will hold up, they also have a select few colors incase you wanna match it to your paint. be aware if that stuff gets on you...its not comin off for a while, it took about a week or so before it got off my hands.

Yea today i am going to take off the heat shields and get the under body clean.
THanks for the advice.
I dont think i want to go to the trouble of grinding down the non rusted spots to the metal tho, thats a crap load of work. I plan on grinding the rusted areas some and applying por-15 over everything including paint.
Bad idea to use por-15 over non rusted spots?
I know it does a better job on metal but i dont think itd rust over the good paint?

You have to clean it real good and leave a scratch behind for the paint to stick.

Wire brush by hand or wire wheel it using a drill motor to knock off the loose stuff then use the POR-15. I've brushed it on over a painted surface and just sanded the paint first. I used it on a rusty cast iron master cylinder and the thing still looks new.

If you have it all apart I would take some more time and go ahead and just do it, at least as much of the underbody as you can. Doing it now will prevent further rusting, which is a good thing. On a previous car I had spots like that from the car sitting for 5+ years. I chose to use paint because I prefer the underbody to still be the same as body color, but thats more preference then anything. However paint will take more prep then POR 15 will. I took a large grinder with a wire wheel on it to the bottom of the car in any very rusty spots, as well as any spots starting to bubble to remove and loose or crusty pieces. I sanded the rest down and used some plain old rattle can primer and some paint and went at it. Now it was far from a professional job but it looked much better and there was no worry of rust under there.

Update...
I decided to paint, i have spent 2-3 weekends prepping for POR-15. All the underbody is sanded and the loose rust is taken off. I am going to cut the notch in the tunnel and pound it out and get the new 4l80e to fit in there then paint the underbody this weekend.
I will take pictures and post sunday.
FYI...wirewheel (bronze in color) that says paint/rust stripper on it I found to be the most useful rust/paint removal tool.
3M wheels are good for really hard material to take off, regular wirewheels suck IMO
