Default Is this the right paint.

I am painting the lower plastic part of the air box and sanded it from 180 grit to 1500 grit. Now im painting and it dont look right. I wanted to look more like metal and it just looks a little darker then stock. The paint im using is called SEM color coat and it says that its for plastic. It also says it changes or renews color on most flexible and rigid plastic. And the color is black. I bought the stuff from car quest and also bought there plastic prep spray. The guy there told me that the paint melts into the plastic so I dont need to primer it. If some one can help me I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

What are you trying to accomplish? The plastic paint is more of a dye than a paint, so if you're going for a body color look under hood, youll need to start over. 1500 grit is way more fine than you really need. You shouldn't need to sand with anything finer than about 220 to prep for paint. At this point, I'd let dry what you've got done, go pick up some paint that is the color you want, lightly sand with 220, then paint. I did the dash plastics in my Toreador Red Contour with Dupli-color and was stunned with how closely it matches my factory color. You could go one step finer than 220 to make sure that you've got no sand scratches, but for the bottom of your air intake, that should be good enough. When you paint, several thin, light coats is better than a couple of heavy ones, especially with metallics. For added pop, pick up the rattle can clear too, and follow the directions on the can.

to paint plastics, you'll need an adhesion promoter. The most popular is Bulldog. I believe Autozone even carries it.

The adhesion promoter probably isn't absolutely necessary. You've already sanded once, and you'll sand again prior to painting again. By sanding, you're creating something for the paint to bite to. Be thorough, take your time, make sure that everything is CLEAN before starting to spray. If you feel you absolutely need to use an adhesion promoter, try to use one produced by the same company that makes the paint you're going to use. Products made by the same manufacturer are designed to be used together, and the results will be much better than if you mix and match. I know I've seen a couple of adhesion promoters on the shelf at Auto Zone but I couldn't tell you what brand. Practice and experiment to see what works and what you like. Paint is cheap, experience is valuable.

Get the color code off of your RPO sticker, you should be able to come pretty close at Advance, Auto Zone, Checker, etc...

A couple of the local paint shops (carquest included) can mix up any color you want, and put it into an aerosol can. They're kinda pricey, but that would be the best route to go IMO

Adhesion promoter is necessary. No matter how much you sand it paint will not stick to plastics without it. If you do not want to use it just dont plan on touching it or letting anything else touch it for that matter. When the solvents evaproate out of the paint it will peel off. The color code for your car if it is pewter is 382E and there are a lot of alternates (different shades) to that particular paint code.

Yah I thought of that. I had a feeling it would be a hard color to match. I think im gonna use black. I want to buy some of the pewter and test it on somthing else and then if it looks good maybe I'll pull the intake manifold off.

Ok guys so I resanded it and sprayed it with the adhesion promoter then panted it black followed by clear coat. I used all Dupli color products on it. Now my question is can I wet sand it to make it look more smooth. I was smooth as hell befor I sanded it now its not. And also what grit paper should I use for this. Thanks.
