How to get tape off paint?

How to get tape off paint? Got a quick question. On my other car (BMW 325i) some ******* prior owner smashed up the front driver's side turn signal lens, bought a new one then proceeded to tape it in place with clear scotch tape. Later, the lens was mounted permanetly, but the tape was left on the paint. The tape looks pretty old (1-2 years at least) and I can't scrape it off with my fingernail, its so baked-onto the black paint. Does anyone know of any ways to get it off? (please keep in mind that i'm in Italy, so I can't just pop on over to Autozone) I do have a beefy cordless drill, buffing wheel and rubbing compound; but I think this would eat through the clearcoat before the tape came off. Suggestions?

if you think your hands can be steady enough, use a razor blade. Just watch out for curves or high spots. Then use a laquer thinner to remove the glue residue. Then follow that up with a good buff and wax on the affected area. I used to detail cars and I would use a blade to remove pinstripes, just takes a steady pair of hands and some patience. Good luck!!
You can also use WD-40. I have used it a few times for that. I had ducktape on a car that I bought with a window out of it. They had used duck tape and a trash bag to make a window. LOL. Just spray some on a rag and clean it off. Then hit it with a little wax, and should be good.

i guess depending on what kind and how long it was in the sun. but I used this deal called the Eraser that fits in a drill. that i took off all my sheriff office decals that was on one of my cars.
