I would use 1000-1200 grit wet dry. Im assuming you are using automotive clear? It won't show the scratches i do it all the time on foggy headlights. They look brand new.

I prefer the covers, i had them sprayed once and there were times i just didnt like it, so i like having the options of taking it off, just what i think after my experience, but im sure it will look good.

I just did mine today and love the outcome. I scuffed them with 1500 first and then wet sanded the black before clearing with the same 1500. Then after the clear dried I wet sanded them again with 1500 until there was no orange peel left. Finally it was buffing time. I used 3M foam pad polish for dark cars and a foam pad on a drill. I've done this countless times before with other high end props so I know the touch. I wouldn't recommend you doing this without some practice first. The outcome was pure gloss on the back of a silver TA. I will take a few shots here soon. Good luck and take your time.
