I've killed 3 ls1 pcms in a 98, but it was learning how to develop flashing hardware/software and having a checksum issue. (P0602/P0605 code)

Since then, I have flashed it hundreds of times, without issue, using SCT, HPT, EFILive, and Tunercats.

Now I just run my roadrunner in my 98 car, since it is live tuning.

98 pcms don't hold VIN information - Extra pain / fail.

I have tuned 98 PCM's countless times with no issues. Just don't kill the car or laptop batteries.

And don't open or close doors, turn on radio, hvac, etc.

I haven't had one single failure flashing, but I take all the necessary steps you should take to try and minimize risks.

Best bet for 98's is to get and install a 99- up PCM. That's one of the mods that I need to do.

TCS/ASR will not work when you do this, I swapped in a 2001+ (12200411 pcm) and it had no noticable difference, so I swapped a 98 back in.

It I could have kept TCS and the wiring harness wan't all mangled due to the extra length, then I would have kept the 99+ pinout.

I have no TCS/ASR. There won't be any noticable difference between the two power wise but it's much easer to tune 99 and up pcm's compared to tuning 98's. That's the only reason for it to be done IMO
