Default mail order tune vs. dyno tune

Well i finnally go my car back together and it runs fine with new cam and every thing but you can tell it needs a tune. My question is it worth the money for a true dyno tune vs just getting a mail order tune, both from speed inc.
Also anybody have any idea about how much hp i would be leaving on the table by doing a mail order tune vs an actually dyno tune? Its an m6 if that makes a difference.

i have a 224/224 cam
underdrive pulley
pacesetter lt
catless mids
custom cat back
custome intake
i already have a just a base mail order tune from SpeedInc. that i got when i did the hearders before i got the cam.

mail order tune is to make it safer to drive to the dyno after a cam install, heads, injectors, ect.

Why on earth would you pay for a mail order tune, drive to the dyno and then pay again for a dyno tune? Am I missing something here? Wouldn't it be cheaper to just pay to have it towed to the dyno if your that worried about it? Now I can see the need for one but not both.

With regards to mail order tunes I sent mine off to Frost. This guy did a fantastic job on my mail order tune. I use to be a skeptic but not anymore, totally different car and I didn't have to pay $400 plus bucks to get it either. I'd look him up and give him a call if I were you.

look at it this way: a mail order tune would be like using a dremel to mill your heads. they may feel smooth and look straight but they wont be perfect. a dyno would be like using a cnc lathe to mill your heads, ie it will be dead on and perfect. with a mail order tune your car will feel smooth and run pretty good, but with a dyno tune you will squeze out all the hp you can and as long as all your components are working properly your car will be running perfect. you will not get a perfect mail order tune, only one that feels better than it did.

i have numbers to prove this.
after heads and cam, i got wait4me mail order tune.
went to rpm in lewisville to get a dynotune.
first pull with the mail order tune - 308hp/310tq...
after the dyno tune - 368/372...

dyno tune, definately worth it.

I understand your logic, I can definatly see the need when talking about a HCI swap. But a bolt-on combo I see no need to spend $400 plus bucks to gain an extra 5-6 hp on a dyno tune.

You had a head and cam set up that only made 308HP?

You had to have told them you were going to get it dyno tuned. This is possible if they sent you a start up tune i suppose.

You have a pretty basic set up, any mailorder tuner should be able to nail it and save you some mod money

Not that you wont get more power from a dyno tune, just depends on the tuner.

mailorder tune = POOP!

i tried it for my new cam. worst mistake i ever made. your money would be better spent buying candy and driving your car untuned!.....at least the candy will make you feel better about your car driving like ****!

in all honesty, it is better to save your cash for a dyno tune.
