Default idle problems with comp cam xr281

its a 98 z28 with the xr281hr cam. when i got it, it seemed to idle at about 1300. it was tuned by chuck at hpe. i took it to a local shop and found the tach was off by about 350 rpm, and it was idling at 950-ish. it just seemed like a really fast idle, so we turned it down to 800, and now it surges, hard to start, etc. not only that, but it just seems like its still idling fast. im going to go back and get the idle back at 950, because i wasnt having any problems with stalling or anything before. is this a normal idle speed for this cam? it seems like it wants to lope, but its idling too fast. i dont get it. any hints?

I have your same cam in my 2000. Drives, starts and idles perfect. Nice lope to it also. If you are having problems with any of the above then you have a bad tune. Mine will idle at 825 all day long and never wants to stall. I tuned mine myself. If you know anybody with EFI Live that can flash a tune for you I have a great tune you could use. The only problem I ever had was the normal hot start problem with cams but now I have that fixed also. Starts and idles every time.
