Default Primary header tube temps

I'm interested in knowing what my header primary's temperature's should be at hot idle when i hit them with my laser temp gun.

Also, should i even install a Exhaust temp gauge on a heads and cam car? I've got the gauge/probe/module from another project.

Thanks guys,
Russell

If your running the car untuned go real easy on her. IMO an EGT gauge is not needed on an N/A car.

I was hitting mine with my temp gun when I was trying to figure out which one was not firing. When the engine was warm and it was idling they were about 450 to 500 degrees. A safe egt at WOT would be in the 1350 range with good stainless valves. Thats if you are turboed. You can go to about 1400 or a little higher for short periods with N/A or a supercharger. The seals will start melting and bearings will be heat affected on a turbo. I have seen truck stuck in the mud that was a turbo gasser and he let it get to hot and lost a seal in the turbo and oil was burning in the intake and cylinders it was not pretty. Steel melts at 2250 and stainless at 2500 so I don't think a gas engine egt gauge is necessary.

^^^^ the face of those valves are at 3500-5000 degrees for a split second during the bang stroke so an egt is necessary in every application if you are running the bag off it just my opinion though i know lots of guys who can tune an engine just by listening to it hahaha kidding i know i feel alot safr wen there is a actual # staring me in the face not whoa that feels faster hey why are my pistons dripping out the tail pipe
sorry got a little carried away

The valves are not usualy what i see go bad, it is the valve seats themselves. If you warp or distrot a valve seat from excessive heat you are going to have that cylinder leak through the exhaust and you know thats not good. I have never needed a egt on a gasser. All my diesels have had them but to each their own. I towed my camper with my suburban that has a 6.0 and a 4l80e and the headers were about 1100 when i pulled over right after pulling a pretty good hill. That was about a 12000 combined weight so I wouldn't be to worried as long as you air/fuel is in good shape.

Good info guys, thanks.
My Primary temps were all between 410-440 when the motor was not thoroughly heat soaked 20 minutes half throttle around town.

Alright, here's a turbo EGT gauge Q: I'll be adding twin 48 lbs/min 12cm T3/t4 blowers this NOV-DEC. Will i need a probe after both turbos? Or just 1 side?

You would want it before not after both turbos in my opinion. You want to know the temp of the exhaust going through your turbos, there is not much concern after the turbo because its in the exhuast piping anyways. I guess you would kind of want it in both if you are already spending the money on the turbo's and piping and all the good stuff, why cut corners and burn something up?

No cutting corners, just curious if it was necessary.
