Okay, I did the following...
1. Replumbed the PCV for reverse flow out thru the oil filler cap (and the PCV valve is now vertical); seems to work reasonably well, although I did detect some oil in the PCV valve (small amount); I'm waiting to get my photos processed onto CD; I post them as soon as I can (no digital camera yet); I'm now going to make a "rev 2" cap with a smaller hole and some kind of filtering material/mesh; keep you posted;
2. Applied top engine cleaner (...you should've seen the BIG smoke...!!!!); this has eliminated almost all the ping;

Thanks for all your help.

7 degrees of knock is a lot, and audible knock is rare and BAD.

I would look at your fuel system, maybe you have a bad or clogged injector.

If you are still in warranty, why not have them go thru this stuff.

Your PCV mods are not needed for a stock car you have other problems don't bandaid it IMO.

The dealer did not want to do anything, and said to use higher octane (which I already was) and to use octane boost for one tankful; injectors seem good (I did the injector balance test using EFILive V6 - the rpm drops were all very close to each other);

With the stock PCV arrangement, it does suck oil, as many people can verify; why does the LS6 use a different PCV arrangement...?
