Default Hp tuners newbi question

I am moving along quite nicely with my ls2 swap in my 78 Malibu, and have a question about hp tuners. I have the engine, trans, and wiring out of a 2006 GTO my harness will be back from Current Performance soon, and I know i have to delete the vats in the pcm to get the car started. I am going to get a copy of HP tuners to do this. My concern is I am not sure if I know the vin number from the donor car. Does hp tuners auto id the vin when you plug it in or do you need to input the vin? Please don't me for asking a search revealed nothing. Thanks for the help guys

You will not need the vin. Simply read the ecm, licence it, tune it. Very easy. Good luck!

When you read your PCM HP Tuners will actually tell you the VIN of the donor car.

What does HPTuners do if the VIN has been changed to something else out of range of a normal VIN #?

Our software auto identifies the pcm via the operating system or vin so if the vin was changed it doesn't care as long as its an OS it can match to a specific pcm id E40, E38, E67 so it knows what seed/key to use.

Cool thanks Bill. I just purchased a used HPTuners STD and have sent it off to be upgraded to PRO so I can use it for Fords. The STD cable already had LS1's 02-05. I have a 99 LS1. Does this mean if I simply changed my VIN with EFI LIVE and use a later stock OS I could effectively tune my 99 with later year model licences.

This isn't something I'm actually planing on pursuing as I use COS5 and have an LS1 Stream with EFI LIVE. I'm just curious to see if this is a sort of flaw in the HPTuners licensing scheme.

No, our software would recognize the vin/os mismatch between the year's and would not allow you to license or write the file back to your pcm.

Ok now I'm confused. If I for example pulled an 04 tune noted the VIN and programmed that VIN into a 99 with EFI LIVE (as it can do that) and then full flashed that same tune into a 99 with EFI LIVE. Your saying I couldn't then pull and reflash it with HPTuners? I'm going to give it a crack when I get my MPVI now just to see if I can.

You'd likely be able to read it without any issue at all, however once you open the file it would come up as an invalid vin/os pair error you will be unable to license this file.
