Default "SES" Light on then off

My SES light just recently started coming on but I can get it to turn off by putting the car into neutral and then starting it like that instead of park. The local mechanic wants $85 to read my codes and I can't afford my own scan tool. Any thoughts?

Post in the Western members forum to see if anyone lives near you who would be willing to help you out? If you can swing by my place, I'll do it for free

pretty sure o'reillys and autozone read codes for free? they won't clear them, tho. once you get the codes, search for them on here. you'll probably find them all.

i don't think auto parts stores will let you scan in california anymore.
if you do a search on google, you'll see where everyone complains about it on message boards, but can't find the supposed law that says they can't rent out the scan tools. supposedly its the industry reacting to a class action lawsuit.

there's guys in/around modesto with scanners. just post up in the western section.
