Yes it would change the vcm id number to whatever that random file had in it.

The OSID is the Operating System Number
The VCM ID is the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) of the VCM/PCM.
This is a Hardware ID number and as far as I know it you can't change it unless you do some fancy work with the memory chip when it is out of the PCM.

I was always under the impression a write entire will change this.

I just asked the guy who wrote our software and it does, the vcm id number is in the same block as the vin which gets overwritten during write entire on LS1's.

If that was the case you could program 10000 cars with 1 hpt lisence

No, you are misunderstanding how the license works (or you are referring to using other PCM flashing warez). Those 10,000 cars will all have different ID's. In order to make them them same as the one file you did license, you have to license them (so that you can write to them).

Correct, our software can detect if you don't have a license for the vcm id number in the pcm you are writing to and will ask you to license the vcm id on the pcm if you don't have a license for it.

You quoted him him saying that about their software and you are talking about a TechII...

Can a TechII even modify the VCM ID though?

I have been playing with the VCM ID in bin files. I have changed the VCM ID in a bin and then flashed the bin into the PCM and read it back out. So far the VCM ID doesn't change to the new one even on a Write Entire or Forced Full Program

No, from what I have been digging, a Tech2 cannot change the VCM ID.

Has anyone confirmed, 100% confirmed, that you can change the VCM ID by flashing a PCM with a file from another PCM?

I am trying with Winflash and CANNOT change the VCM ID, why is this a problem? I put a 99 OS in my 0411 PCM and it blanked my VCM ID and I cannot get it back at all. The VIN is written differently. Is it an issue for me? Not directly, but I am concerned why it did it.

I am betting that no one can change the VCM ID unless they have a command that specifically changes it.

If anyone has unlimited in HPT and an 0411 and would be willing to test this, please let me know.

Yes, doing a write entire is really a full binary flashing; the VCM ID will be whatever is in the file that you flash on (HPTuners). I'm 100% sure because I do it.

You can't do it with winflash.
