I don't think the 1336 is your issue here. This is an old thread, but I know some of these guys are still on here. I'm trying to decipher what exactly happened given your explanation, but it's difficult at best to give you any ideas here. I'm assuming Ron is RPM right? And by rotor, are you taking about the reluctor? Assuming I'm right with those guesses, I would say you have a sensor to reluctor problem. As in the PCM isn't picking up crank signal. The cam sensor doesn't have anything to do with firing the coils. Are you getting fuel? Have you used a noid light to determine that as well? Hate to say it, but it sounds like a bad reluctor, but hard to tell. You can also try a different crank sensor and see what that does. I've had brand new ones that didn't work. Cost me months of troubleshooting thinking it was "fine" since it was new. Use a delco, not a knockoff.
Also, a new thread may have been more appropriate for this, but I have to give you props for your research here.
ChopperDoc is giving good advice.
First, the cam sensor can be ruled out - even if disconnected, the engine will start half the time; the other half of the time it backfires.
Your mention of "rotor" and "changed coil" make me think this is not a typical LS1 engine with a PCM and 8 coil packs; if true you need to contact the manufacturer of your aftermarket electronic equipment.
