Physical reliability of the '98 PCM isn't an issue.

The reason everyone wants to go with a newer PCM is due to the fact that the '98 is severely limited in it's capability when compared to the newer PCM.

As for me? Half the resolution in the VE tables hasn't been an issue, but I still plan on upgrading to a newer PCM when I get the iron block turbo swap done.

I can't remember ever having a '98 die on me.

It is funny to hear other's stories on tuning certain cam grinds. Most cars the tune works great..... but every once in a while I get one where I just want to smash my head into the dash.

I have fried one 98 PCM but it was my fault. I wrote a calibration onto the wrong OS as Jimmy pointed out above. Other than that, millions of flashes without issue with various OSes.

I baked a couple that way back in the LS1 Edit days (bad battery + LS1 edit = door stop)

I've actually had more problems with the newer PCM's (08+). I have had two already that had an I/O go bad.

Frost...i have been wanting to get a mail order tune on my 98 temporairly. of course, only temporary, however, i want to be able to run it this year at the track untill i get some more things finalized then get a dyno tune. i had it tuned 2 years ago (last time i drove it) and 600 bucks later, the car still ran like ****. better than it did initially, but still not 600 dollars good. A/F's were all messed up, (inside of the headers look like they have been on the car for 200k miles, when they were in actuality only on there for 1k....) ill PM you with details on the builld if your intrested in helping out.

My original PCM went to Ed Wright back in 1999, and I received a programmed core. I think I had a couple of core swaps with Ed when I switched cams the first couple of yesrs. Never had a problem with one until maybe 2 years ago when I just couldn't get rid of the false 4* of knock which came out of nowhere. Replaced it at the dealer and all has been fine since.

If it takes weeks to develop, you might want a scan to
see what the Knock Learn Factor is. This accumulates
all your KR events and drives timing toward the low
octane table.

Other trims get where they're going in less time, and
apply to narrower ranges of operation. But they would
be worth a look too.
