Default Tune it yourself?

I have a 98 Z28 and a laptop. What are my options as far as tuning software? I'm interested in learning to tune and I dont want to have to pay to get it re-tuned everytime I add a mod.

I read some info on this on the sticky.

What are the differences with my car being a 98 versus 99-02?
Would I be able to do everything? Including A/F, shift points, adding a TQ?
Would I be able to hook it up and adjust things whenever I need to?

How hard is it to learn? I'm not an idiot but I have no experience with tuning beyond what ive read on this website.

The tables are very similar, the 99+ pcm's have about 20% more tables to adjust but the 98 pcm's have a good amount of processing power so that isn't really much of a disability.

Yes you'll be find in adjusting shift points, afr, etc.

Yes once you license your pcm you'll be able to adjust the tune an unlimited amount of times.

Tuning isn't something you'll learn overnight but it is doable.

Does the kit come with everything I need to plug it in and get started?

HPTuners is one option. EFI LIVE is another. With EFI LIVE you can tune unlimited 98model LS1's for free without using any of the included licences.

You can have a play with the software here too before you buy it. HPTuners doesn't do a Demo unfortunately.

I bought EFIlive with an LM-1. I would have considered HPtuners if they had a demo...
Didn't know you could tune unlimited 98s

EDIT: Also after trying to learn after one year i have no clue how to tune an engine.

I recently took the dive and bought hptuners. The simple stuff is easy to do, and with some time and effort you can learn to tune youself. I'm still learning but it is a lot of fun to do. I say go for it, its not like anyone was born knowing how to use this software they all had to learn at some point.

Alot of people like to over complicate tuning, but at the end of a day just look at it like a box of tools that can remove every part on a car to GM technician spec.

If you do not know how to use every tool in that box, you can still quite a bit of "Typical" stuff with just a socket set

I have EFILive and HPTuners. I changed over to HPTuners because 99.9% of tuning books, tuning DVDs, learn to tune at home courses, and live learn to tune classes are based of HPTuners software.

I have a small library of all of the above. Although with very little extra effort the HPTuners information can easy be used with EFILive.

Tuning more about understanding the layers of the onion. Knowing what your changing and making sure you get are the results you wanted, and not looking for a "magic number" to tune your car.

I don't understand what/why you said...

You posted up your tuning efforts on the efilive forum, seemed to me you installed an MS4 into your 2000 TA and tuned it... seemed to be ok, people answered your questions, reviewed your files, pointed you to resources... you didn't ask very many questions (only 31 total posts there to date; your last post was 7/12/2009)... if you want to know something then search for it and/or ask questions about it.

There's lots of tuning resources on the forums (ls1tech/hptuners/efilive)... there's some books like Dan Maslic and Greg Banish... some reading/thinking/asking/doing is required.
