Too much timing... not enough fuel... combination of both...

I would begin with listening. Excess valvetrain clatter, etc.
Excess acoustic activity that's crank-synchronous and hits
the detect window could be a false knock maker. Exhaust
banging can do it also.

Then I'd look for misfires as an indication that you have
a lean cylinder. Stock tune should be way too fat to ping.
But a fuel shortfall, single or global, could change all that.
Fuel filter is another good thing to just get overwith, you
certainly do not want to tune for the pressure drop of an
old crusty one. Check WOT fuel pressure, they all fade but
if you see less than 52# that's abnormal.

If you run an oiled air filter, clean the MAF. Hell, clean it
anyway (spray only).

Tryn to find out Y I was having the same issue..Hopefully the culprit ..was determined that I had very worn motor mounts, causing y pipe to slap the floor boards, causing a false knock! Just Replaced ALL (Tranny also) MOUNTS WITH POLY MOUNTS!..We will C now how it goes..
