Arrow To pcm swap or not to pcm swap that is the question? 98 to 99-02

ok iam debating to swap my pcm from a 98 to a newer 99-02 pcm, my mods are 347, ls2 rods, stock crank, mahle pistons, prc ls6 heads, 42lb injectors, ms3 cam, fast 90 intake, arp2000 rod bolts, arp main cap studs and head studs, jesel valvetrain, kooks 1 7/8th headers, tick performance level 3 t56, dennys d/s, moser 9'', 4:10's, ect..... ok now should i go all out and do the pcm swap or stick with the 98 computer? also when i get it tuned it will be tuned with EFI live and should i go speed density or stay with the stock maf, also eventually i will be hitting the car with a 125-175 wet shot thru a 90mm plate. so what do you guys think i should do, i do have a pcm in hand to swap out but is it realy worth the fustration? any help would be apprciated thanks matt...

I think you should, if not for the more tuneabilty, for the faster processor in it

You'll not get a definitive answer on here either. We all have our opinions on this. Is the 99-02 computer better....yes. Does it process faster....yes. Does it have a few more tuning features....yes. Is the '98 computer tunable enough for your current and future mods......YES. I personally would leave it alone. I can tune those '98 computers just fine, without any problems. Which means others can as well.

I have a 98 and have done the swap. It is definitely worth it. The 98 can be very difficult to tune WOT reliably. The 0411 pcm does a much better job of commanding the proper fuel and adjusting it accordingly.
I’m so glad I swapped out mine, without question the car runs and reacts a lot better.

I have a 99 PCM loaded with a tune just for your setup. I also have all the information to convert it to a 99 PCM

lol there is nothing wrong with the 98 pcm i tune them all the time with zero problems, i have two 850+ rwhp 97-98 vettes running that pcm with no problems..... people who blame the pcm for its "untuneablity" masking there lack of tuning ability...

wow 850+ rwhp thats pretty impressive, this is gunna be a really hard decision to make, i might just send out my 98 pcm to frost and see if he has a nice tune for my set up? also if i get my 98 pcm tunned and eventually i wana do a pcm swap can the tune be transferd over? hmmmmm

I have only tuned 8 97 & 98 LS1 PCM's. I have never had an issue either, but I have calibration information on 99 to 2010 PCM's. Having this information helps and that is why I sell 99+ PCM for 98 F-Body's. I am under the impression that the 99+ PCM has more "Drivability Predicting Parameters" over the 98.

OP,

Who will be tuning it...?

If you will be self-tuning it on an on-going basis, then do the swap. This will also allow you to run a nitrous COS at any time.

If your tuner will be tuning it, then don't do the swap, or leave it up to him.

i will not be tuning the car, iam either gunna get a frost mail order tune or bring it to east coast supercharging. they tune with efi live, can that program fix the fuel level issue with the pcm swap? i also have a aem wideband in my car to watch a/f's.

The fuel level is fixed with a fuel segment copy from a van file.

That isn't good to do at all. only 2 parameters need to be changed in the fuel segment

Yes and no. Some tables could be transferred over but most of the tables are different or have more cells in them in a 99+ pcm. I think it easier just to start over on the tune when going to a 99+ pcm.

I am sure he does have a good tune for your setup, I have heard nothing but good things about Steve. BUT with your mods I would recommend getting a tune in person by someone if there are any good tuners in your area. I would get in touch with Frost and see what he recommends and go from there.

This is ABSOLUTELY the best bet (the first sentence quoted).
